To both.<\/strong><br \/>\nGreat leaders don\u2019t choose between enforcement and empathy\u2014they integrate them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why It\u2019s So Hard<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Enforcement<\/strong> is about fairness, clarity, consistency, and boundaries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empathy<\/strong> is about listening, understanding, and patience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under stress, it\u2019s easy to lean too far one way:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some double down on enforcement, thinking it earns respect.<\/li>\n<li>Others default to empathy, hoping it inspires change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Enforcing can feel cold. Empathy can feel soft. But without balance, both approaches can fail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cost of Leaning Too Far<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Empathy without enforcement leads to permissiveness.<\/li>\n<li>Enforcement without empathy creates fear, resentment, and disengagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re leading a team\u2014or raising a teenager\u2014favoring one over the other is unproductive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leading in the Tension<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Holding people accountable <em>with empathy<\/em> is the real work of leadership.<br \/>\nIt sounds like this: \u201cThis standard matters\u2014and so do you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Your job as a leader is to understand the person\u2019s perspective.\u00a0 It is important to recognize that you can understand and not agree.\u00a0 You can understand and still enforce.<\/p>\n<p>Empathy\u2014understanding&#8211;humanizes the rules.\u00a0 Enforcement protects what matters.\u00a0 Together, they build fairness, trust, clarity, and growth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In leadership, management, and parenting, there\u2019s a tension we all face: Should I lay down the law\u2014or listen with compassion?
